Are you rusting out?

What do I mean? Read this excellent piece in The Conversation to find out.

It's relevant to professions well beyond the teacher-educators featured in the study and highlights a significant problem facing individuals and organisations - and one that's likely to be exacerbated by longer working lives.

The stereotype of the older worker just coasting along, wilfully doing the same thing year in and year out, and counting down the days to retirement, masks how it really feels to be working for decades with no room for variation or experimentation, no stimulation, no progression, diminishing recognition of what you contribute, and no organisational interest in your development.

If it feels like that for you, what are you going to do about it?

Update December 2025: I have now retired from career coaching to pursue other projects relating to work and career. If you need career support, start your search (in the UK) at the Career Development Institute’s Professional Register
